The aim of this research was to examine the relationship between achievement goal orientations and the use of stress-coping strategies among college students. The sample consisted of 532 university students who were enrolled in different programs at Sakarya University, in Turkey. Of the participants, 279 were female and 253 were male. To assess strategies typically used in coping with stressful situations, the Coping Scale (Ozbay & Olivarez, 1999) and to measure achievement goal orientations of the sample the Achievement Goal Orientations Scale (Midgley et al.,1998) were administrated. Canonical correlation and MANOVA were conducted to statistically analyze the data. Consistent with hypotheses, results demonstrated that there were high relationships between students’ achievement goal orientations and their use of coping strategies.

The people of different societies are feeling the effects of globalization very strongly in their daily life. The rapid advances in the technological arena as well as the high-speed communication made the transformation harsher for developing countries. Turkey is one of those countries which experiences transformation even harder than many other developing countries in the globe, as a result of turmoil it has been enduring in the last 30 years. In this paper we analyze why Turkey has been experiencing all this turbulence much more severe and in a more complex way. As a requirement, we have had a short look at the foundation of the Turkish republic and its progress towards modernization. Then, we have assessed the recent developments occurring in Turkey from the globalization perspective as well the effects of the globalization process on this country.

Aim Identifying high-risk groups in patient with coronary artery disease (CAD) is critical for predicting future adverse events. fQRS has been shown to be related to major cardiovascular adverse events (MACE) in patients with CAD. However, predictive value of fQRS for more than 5 yrs has not been evaluated. This study examined the predictive value of fQRS in patients with CAD and percutaneous coronary intervention during a 10-yrs period. Material and methods Patients with CAD and percutaneous coronary intervention between March 2007 and May 2009 were included the study. An electrocardiogram was recorded following percutaneous coronary intervention and analyzed for the presence of fQRS. The fQRS pattern was defined as an additional spike inside the QRS complexes of at least two consecutive leads. Patients were followed for 10 yrs. A MACE was all-cause mortality or new-onset decompensated heart failure. Patients were divided into two groups according to presence or absence of MACE, and their clinical variables were compared. Results Of 1261 patients included in the study, MACE developed in 374 (29.6%). MACE (+) patients were older (p<0.001), more likely to have diabetes mellitus (p=0.003), fQRS (p<0.001), and ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) (p<0.001). Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that age (p<0.001), STEMI (p=0.001), fQRS (p=0.017), and elevated serum creatinine (p=0.001) were independent predictors of MACE. Conclusion The presence of fQRS predicted MACE during 10 yrs of follow-up of patients with CAD and percutaneous coronary intervention

AbstractIn this study, it is aimed to analyze the effects of out of school activities of teachers to whom positive attitudes were developed by the students in instructional process and heir some personal features on developed attitude. For this aim, semi-structured interviews were applied to 80 students and 10 teachers working in three different high schools under the authority of Erzurum Directorate of National Education in the first semester of the academic year 2009-2010. After the analyses of gained data, it was found that teachers’ personal features are much more effective than their professional knowledge in the process of developing positive attitudes

Automatic annotation of X-ray images: a study on attribute selection

    Get PDF
Advances in the medical imaging technology has lead to an exponential growth in the number of digital images that need to be acquired, analyzed, classified, stored and retrieved in medical centers. As a result, medical image classification and retrieval has recently gained high interest in the scientific community. Despite several attempts, the proposed solutions are still far from being sufficiently accurate for real-life implementations. In a previous work, performance of different feature types were investigated in a SVM-based learning framework for classification. of X-Ray images into classes corresponding to body parts and local binary patterns were observed to outperform others. In this paper, we extend that work by exploring the effect of attribute selection on the classification performance. Our experiments show that principal component analysis based attribute selection manifests prediction values that are comparable to the baseline (all-features case) with considerably smaller subsets of original features, inducing lower processing times and reduced storage space

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to investigate the performance appraisal errors, prevention of these errors and the role of the human resource units in the identification and prevention of errors in the performance appraisal activities in tourism enterprises where service quality and customer satisfaction are directly related to employee performance. Performance appraisal is one of the most important human resource functions for service enterprises, in which the labor is the predictive factor in production. Performance appraisal is a process that provides various benefits for employees, managers, and the business. It is crucial to plan, execute, finalize and evaluate the results without error in this process, which has a direct impact on the efficiency of the business. Despite this importance of performance evaluation, the debate continues over the accuracy of the performance appraisal processes and results. Considering the importance of employee performance on service performance, in the study, the resources that can be reached to evaluate, the theoretical and practical studies about the performance appraisal and the information obtained within the existing applications have been scanned using the document review method. It is also aimed to determine the errors related to performance appraisals in tourism enterprises by combining the results obtained by the authors based on their individual experiences and observations in the tourism sector. At the end of the study, the role of the human resources department in resolving the identified problems was discussed and solution suggestions were given

Aphid parasitoid, as one of the most important natural enemies of aphid, has been sporadically studied in Turkey. Our findings should contribute to better knowledge of the Turkish and Near East aphidiins fauna. All specimens were collected by sweeping from western and northern Turkey, especially from Marmara and the Black Sea region during the 1989–2004 period. We present new data for Aphidiinae of Turkey and Near East which include eight new species (Toxares deltiger Hal., Aphidius urticae Hal., Ephedrus lacertosus (Hal.), Lipolexis gracilis Först., Monoctonus crepidis (Hal.), Praon abjectum (Hal.), Praon longicorne Marsh., Praon pubescens Starý) and two new genera (Toxares and Lipolexis). We pointed out basal position ofT. deltiger within Aphidiinae with emphasis on several plesiomorphous character states, such as braconid type of wing venation, large number of longitudinal placodes on flagellomeres 1 and 2 and short and triangular ovipositor sheath. We presumed the small fovea on median part of mesonotum in T. deltiger as an apomorphic character. Newly recorded species will help estimate their possible role in agroecosystems of targeted areas
